The Silk Cut campaign had been running for a year or so and the agency was wondering what could follow the abstract ‘cut in silk’ that Charles Saatchi and Paul Arden had created. I can’t quite remember but I think the brief was open to the whole creative department (actually, the whole agency, Saatchi’s had no elitist pride about where ideas came from) but this was my kind of brief and in just one week Moira and I covered the walls of our office with ideas. Charles and Paul went to the client with Cat’s Eyes and Shark and we got the go-ahead to shoot them. I/we did about 8 Silk Cut ads in all, I think my favourite might be the cheese knife with the moon (what is the moon made of?), a very silly joke.

Sliced Bread, below, is in the
UK Advertising Collection in the V&A Museum in London. Model made by Nancy Fouts, photo by Daniel Jouanneau. We flew to Paris with the (wax) bread as hand luggage so that it wouldn’t get damaged. The customs officer was most confused.
