I’d done about 2 years as a writer, latterly with the fabulous art director Alexandra Taylor, but I found myself itching to get involved in layouts, typography, and working with photographers myself. So I told the creative director Jeremy Sinclair that I wanted to be an art director. With a characteristic ‘Hmm..’ he followed up with ‘..ok, we’ll see if we can find you a smock..’ Within a few weeks I was teamed up with a new copywriter, Moira Townsend, and alongside a lot of laughing and the daily elevenses - an egg mayonnaise sandwich and a cuppa - we managed to do some work. We were given the brief to do the campaign in the run up to the stock market flotation of British Airways. Posters, a TV commercial and single and double page ads in the press. A great brief for us. And my first big job as an art director.
